Day 2: Kigali City tour After breakfast make a tour of the city surrounding including Kigali Memorial Genocide Centre: the centre demonstrates the history of Rwanda up to the genocide using video shows, photographs, written accounts and a range of articrafts, personal testimonies and exhibitions. The exhibition portrays a section called “wasted lives” that refer to holocausts and genocides in South-west Africa, Armenia, Cambodia and Bosnia. After lunch transfer to the Volcanoes National Park – the Gorilla trekking Park. Dinner and overnight at Kinigi Guest House (FB)

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Gorilla trekking is normally the highlight of any Africa safari. The Parc national des Volcans is the definitive location to track the rare and captivating mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei) in Africa. This area along the border with Congo (DRC) and Uganda also happens to be of the most magnificent views in Africa. Here is a chain of more than seven volcanoes, the highest being Karisimbi which is over 4500m. on the bamboo and rainforest-covered slopes of the volcanoes are some of the last remaining sanctuaries of mountain gorillas, which were studied in depth first by George Schaller and, more recently, by Dian Fossey living for the 13 years at Bisoke before meeting her death mysteriously. Without her tenacious efforts to have poaching stamped out there possibly wouldn’t be any gorillas surviving in Rwanda (Read: Gorillas in the Mist). There are four habituated gorilla groups in Parc National des Volcans, including the Susa Group with 35 members. The other groups are: Sabinyo with 13 members, Amahura with 16 members and Group 13 with just six. These are all easy to reach. The numbers of people allowed to visit a group at a time should not exceed eight people, thus limiting daily permits to an absolute maximum of 32 daily. Day 4: Golden Monkey Trekking

After breakfast transfer to Gisenyi and right away undertake trekking golden monkeys in the forests. In the afternoon have a community walk and interact with the locals who may entertain to cultural dance. You may opt to go and watch local banana brewing for banana beer. Dinner and overnight at Serena Hotel/Paradise Malahide Hotel (FB)

Day 5: Transfer to Lake Kivu Take your breakfast and transfer to Lake Kivu by road. The boat rides on this lake lead you to magnificent sites around the Virgin Islands including the Napoleon’s Hat Island where you can climb to the top of the hat and watch thousands of Angola bats darkening the blue skies. After lunch proceed to Butare is the intellectual centre of Rwanda – the national university and Institute of Scientific Research and the national museum. Those interested in trees may check out the Arboretum de Ruhande near the university. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Faucon (FB)

Day 6: Nyungwe Forest- Night at Gisakura Lodge

Nyungwe Forest is one of the immense protected montane rainforests in Africa. It covers 970 km2 and offers superb scenery overlooking the forest and Lake Kivu, as well as views to the north of the distant volcanoes of the Parc National des Virunga. The main attraction is the guided tours to track large groups of black and white Angolan Colobus monkeys (up to 400 members in each troop) or chimpanzees. There are about 270 tree species, over 70 mammal species, 275 bird species and a variety of orchids and butterflies. Dinner and overnight at Gisakura Lodge

Day 7: Chimpanzee Trekking Wake up in the morning for breakfast and go for chimpanzee trekking in the Nyungwe forest. This is the home to large troops of chimpanzees only comparable to Kibale Forest national park in Uganda. The L’Hoest’s monkeys and the white Angolan Colobus monkeys make primate tourism in this forest comparable to none else in Africa.

In the afternoon transfer to Nyanza – the historical seat of the ancient Rwanda kings. Visit the palace and attend to traditional story-telling by some village elders. The “Intore” dancers, who gained reputation in world cultural expo in Brussels in 1958, are now part of the rich Rwanda folklore. This warrior’s dance is a jewel of the choreographic heritage of Rwanda. Decorated with a lion mane made of sisal fibre and rings of bells on their ankles coupled with a beautiful choir and a thrilling rhythm, this is the kind of cultural dance that be organized for at your request. Day 8: Return to Kigali After breakfast transfer to Kigali in preparation for your flight back home.
