3 Days Lake Mburo Birding Safari

This 3 days lake bird watching trip takes you to Lake Mburo Nataional Park, one of the most perfect parks in Uganda for a birding safari including wildlife. This park, the closest to Kampala is a real treasure to birders! The landscape is fabulous for bird watching. Bird through wetlands, lakes, savannah, rolling hills, acacia trees – all there providing the perfect habitat for a variety of birds. Over 313 different types of birds have been recorded in this park including the The Shoebill Stork, White-winged Warblers, Black-billed Barbet, Crested Francolin, etc!

The best bird watching spots in Lake Mburo National Park include the swampy valleys of Warukiri and Miriti, and the roadsides between Rwonyo camp and the jetty. There are also ideally-situated viewing platforms at the salt lick, in Miriti Valley, and in Rubanga Forest. Species observed at these locations include the Rufous-bellied Heron, Bateleur, Coqui Francolin, Grey Crowned Crane, Black-bellied Bustard, Brown-chested Lapwing, Emerald-spotted Wood-Dove, Brown Parrot, Red-headed Lovebird, Ross’s Turaco, Bare-faced Go-away-bird, Green Wood-hoopoe, Common Scimitarbill, White-headed Barbet, Red-faced Barbet, Nubian Woodpecker, Red-shouldered Cuckoo-shrike, Long-tailed Cisticola, Yellow-breasted Apalis, White-winged Tit and Finfoot among others.

Rubanga Forest can be visited using a vehicle or on foot. This is a real draw for keen birders, and prior arrangement should be made. The rare Red-faced Barbet – only seen in Lake Mburo National Park – is one of the of the forest’s featured species.

DAY 1: BIRDING LAKE MBURO Today we start our birding trip/safari early in the morning from your respective place of accommodation. As we transfer there will be numerous stop overs looking out for certain bird species with in there hardly missed localities. The Wolly-Necked Stork, Lilac Breasted Roller, Ruffaous Bellied Heron are among the birds of interest on this transfer. Stopping at the equator for photography and stretching up will be worthy while on this birding route in Uganda.

DAY 2: BIRDING LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK Morning birding on foot along the park trails with an armed ranger then back to our lodge for breakfast, after this we proceed for a game and birding drive which gives us higher chances of viewing mammals like the Zebras, Impalas, Elands, Topis, Buffaloes among others, as we do birding we focus our attention on the search for the Red Faced Barbet, Coqui Francolin, Brown Chested Plover, Tabora Cisticola, Lesser Blue Eared Starling, Buff Bellied Warbler, Red Headed Weaver, Black Shouldered Cuckoo Shrike, Sulpher Breasted Bush-shrike, Green Capped Eremomela, Bare faced Go-away-bird, Red Billed Wood Hope and more acacia associated birds, in the afternoon we go for a boat ride in search for the African Finfoot, White Backed and Black Crowned Night Herons, Giant Kingfisher etc back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: BIRDING TO ENTEBBE Our birding today will depend on the flight time or where we spend our night. There are good spots and we look out mostly for species that were missed where the Papyrus gonolek might be among. End of our short Birding Safari in Uganda.
